Black House
This project was the fulfillment of a career-long wish to design a barn. Not an actual barn, of course, but a beautiful, functional new home for a retired couple on their gorgeous estate in Buckinghamshire. The house evokes some of the obvious language of barn architecture--steep pitched roofs, symmetry, and timber cladding--but is scaled to meet the couple’s desire for a smaller home. Clad in dark charcoal timber and contrasting luminous limestone, this elegant yet simple structure is a perfect compliment to the leafy surrounds of its community.
